"High, Low, Piccolo!"
A “hands-on” approach to learning! These fun clapping games combine movement in rhythmic patterns and sequences with rhymes and recitation for non-competitive cooperative play for all ages. The experience of calling and clapping helps improve fine motor skills, bilateral coordination, social skills, impulse control, and has cognition-boosting effects for ALL AGES. Encourage children to play with caregivers, educators, younger siblings, grandparents, and other relatives.
These are physical musical activities for distance learning at home, child care facilities, after school programs, preschools, day care centers, kindergarten classes, or rainy day recesses. This is your go-to source to help give the brain a break during training by introducing physical activity breaks for online classes, early childhood conferences and training, workshops, or webinars.
Clapping games are perfect for home, trips, camps, and other programs for young children. Break from distance learning or other sedentary activity to play a quick clapping game. Included are versions of all-time favorites, hand games that are fresh and new, and songs creatively extended for longer play. Levels of difficulty vary. Additional games, instructions, and video links to variations can be found on the record label's site on the LYRICS page (above right). You may have to copy and paste the links into your browser.
TIPS:
-
Play independently, with a partner, or in a group. Links to how the games are usually played are provided for most songs. Make up your own clapping patterns and sequences.
-
Be CREATIVE! There are no set rules on how any clapping game can be played, and there are variations to every game. Encourage children to come up with their own moves and remember them.
-
Simplify the games by slowing the actions down for younger children and using simple, repetitive moves, or challenge yourself by speeding up or using a more complex series of moves.
-
Any clapping game can be slowed down to a series of 2 or 3 simple claps or pats. Cross the mid-lines of the body and modify the game to match the children's abilities. Pats can be on the lap or shoulders, and claps can be independent (in the air, against a mirror, or computer screen) or with a partner. An example of a simple 1-2-3 variation with a partner is shown below. Try memorizing the first verse and repeatedly clapping and chanting it before adding on additional verses and moves. Clapping simple patterns to any and all of the songs is encouraged.
